Challenge
The Macy’s in 29th Street Mall has experienced a decline in recent years. As a result, Macy’s who owns the land and facility decided to repurpose the building for a future office space. Due to complicated land use codes, an existing area plan, and a changing political landscape, the path to repurpose the facility was challenging.
Approach
Trestle has been guiding Corum Real Estate Development and Macy’s through the City of Boulder’s entitlement process for the Macy’s retail store in Boulder’s 29th Street Mall. The project’s core principle is adaptive reuse of the building, which will reinvigorate the north end of the mall by providing an activated space that bolsters retail sales for both the shopping center and the surrounding community. The project design is lead by Shears Adkins Rockmore Architects and project follows the following guiding principles:
Adaptively re-use the structure
Enhance Twenty Ninth Street mall
Connect the building to the outdoors
Integrate natural light in work environment
Embrace the locational attributes in timeless architecture
Result
After 3 years of planning, the project’s site review with height modification was approved by the City of Boulder’s City Council in January 2021.
